MENA Newswire, MELBOURNE: Australia has pledged approximately US$13 million in emergency assistance to support communities affected by ongoing bushfires in the southeastern state of Victoria, as authorities continue efforts to contain multiple blazes and provide relief to displaced residents. The funding package, jointly announced by the federal government and the Victorian state government, amounts to 19.5 million Australian dollars and is aimed at immediate response needs and early recovery measures in areas impacted by the fires.

The announcement was made as emergency services reported dozens of active fires across Victoria, with several remaining out of control amid dry conditions and shifting winds. Thousands of residents have been evacuated from regional towns and rural properties, while road closures and power outages have affected large areas. Fire authorities have warned that containment efforts remain challenging due to rugged terrain and persistent heat.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the federal government was working closely with state authorities to ensure assistance reached affected communities as quickly as possible. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said the funding would focus on supporting households, farmers, and local services dealing with the immediate consequences of the bushfires, including loss of housing, livestock, and essential infrastructure.
According to officials, a significant portion of the funding will be directed toward agricultural support, with around 10 million Australian dollars allocated to assist livestock producers. The measures include the provision of emergency fodder and support services for farmers who have suffered losses of animals or damage to grazing land. Agriculture authorities said the fires had affected both small family farms and larger commercial operations across several districts.
The package also includes funding for emergency accommodation and temporary housing for residents forced to leave their homes. State agencies said thousands of people had sought shelter in evacuation centers or with relatives and friends as fires threatened residential areas. Additional resources will be directed toward mental health services, with counseling and support programs expanded for individuals and families affected by evacuation, property damage, or loss.
Infrastructure damage assessments underway statewide
Authorities confirmed that more than 300 structures have been destroyed across Victoria since the current fire outbreak began, including homes, sheds, and community buildings. In some locations, entire streets have been damaged or rendered uninhabitable. Damage assessments are ongoing, and officials said the full extent of losses would become clearer once conditions allowed safe access to affected areas.
Fire behavior has been driven by a combination of high summer temperatures, dry vegetation, and strong winds, according to emergency management officials. Although weather forecasts indicated the possibility of slightly cooler conditions in the coming days, authorities cautioned that dry fuel loads and variable winds continued to pose significant risks. Fire bans and restrictions remain in place across large parts of the state.
Federal and state disaster relief arrangements also provide for one-off payments to eligible individuals and families whose homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. These payments are intended to help cover immediate living expenses and essential needs during the early stages of recovery. Officials said additional assistance could be made available as assessments progress and longer-term recovery plans are developed.
Authorities urge compliance with evacuation orders
Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner urged residents to follow official warnings and evacuation orders, emphasizing that conditions could change rapidly. Emergency services personnel, including firefighters from other Australian states, remain deployed across the region to support containment and protection efforts. Authorities said coordination between agencies would continue as the situation evolves.
The current bushfire emergency follows a pattern of severe fire seasons in Australia linked to prolonged dry periods and extreme weather. Government officials reiterated that resources would remain focused on protecting lives, supporting affected communities, and stabilizing conditions as firefighting operations continue across Victoria.
